What Is General Admission?
General admission, often shortened to GA, means selling tickets from a shared capacity limit without assigning specific seats.
Every ticket holder receives the same type of access. Guests choose where to stand or sit after entering the venue, usually on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no seating plan, no seat selection during booking and no guaranteed position.
General admission ticketing is commonly used for festivals, outdoor events, standing concerts, fan zones, community gatherings, club events, networking sessions and informal performances.
What Is Reserved Seating?
Reserved seating means that every ticket is assigned to a specific seat in the venue.
Guests usually select their exact seat during booking from a visual seating plan. That seat remains reserved for them, so they do not need to arrive early to secure a preferred location.
Reserved seating is also known as allocated seating. Both terms describe the same system: a particular seat is assigned to one ticket holder.
Which Option Is Right for Your Event?
General admission is usually the better option when visitors are expected to move freely, stand or choose their own position.
Standing concerts and festivals often use general admission because fixed seating is unnecessary. Fan zones also benefit from GA ticketing because visitors share large viewing areas and may arrive throughout the event.
Community events, school fairs, fundraisers and corporate parties can also work well with general admission. These formats usually focus on activities, networking or movement rather than fixed seating.
Organisers should consider the following questions before choosing:
- Does the venue have fixed seating?
- Do guests expect a guaranteed seat?
- Will visitors move between several areas?
- Are some locations more valuable than others?
- Will different ticket prices depend on seat location?
- Could guests queue early to secure a better position?
- Does the event need both standard and premium access?
The ticket description should clearly explain whether seating is reserved or available on a first-come, first-served basis. This helps prevent misunderstandings and gives guests enough information before booking.
How HotWay Supports General Admission and Reserved-Seating Events
HotWay helps organisers create or import guest lists,
generate branded PDF tickets with unique QR codes and
scan tickets directly from smartphones.
For general admission events, organisers can create separate categories for standard access, VIP guests, early entry, staff and invited visitors.
For reserved-seating events, existing seat information and QR codes can be imported into HotWay for entrance validation after seats have been assigned through the organiser’s booking system.
